fleets can proactively eliminate risk, optimize operational performance, lower fuel costs and most importantly, exonerate drivers and the company. Because inward and outward facing videos can vouch for drivers in the event of an accident, SmartDrive gives Oakley employees fewer reasons to stress while on the road.
“With protection for both our professionals and the company being the primary interest, it is key for Oakley Transport to be able to show that there was nothing occurring from the inside of the cab to have caused the accident to happen,” Kelly McDowell, director of safety, said. “We respect the privacy of all our professionals, which is why we provide the option to turn off the inward facing event recorder while the truck is stationary.” SmartDrive operates by using numbers to assess 80 different behaviors that are categorized as risky behaviors. These include speeding, tailgating, texting, not wearing a seat belt, aggressive maneuvers, etc. Currently, Oakley Transport has 50%+ of the intelligence platform installed in their units and are committed to fully implementing their entire fleet in the near future. Essentially, the higher the score, the higher the risk. A driver receives points when an action is deemed hazardous, which is automatically calculated by an algorithm within the system. In regards to the incentive program, driver safety scores from 100-50 will earn $.03 per mile and scores of 49 and below will earn $.05 for all dispatched, earned and authorized miles. There is no cap on the monthly reward drivers can earn for safe, secure and smart driving habits. The program is operated by performance results and compensation awards are paid out in monthly installments. In order to be considered for the incentive program, drivers must be actively employed in working status at the time the compensation is paid. McDowell says that about 40-50% of drivers would have qualified in February had the compensation been in place then, and numerous drivers are expected to reap the Safe Drive Program benefits once it is officially launched. As far as tangible assets are concerned, the top mileage per month drivers who see about 15k miles can earn up to $9k in a 12 month timeframe.
