7 Ways To Beat The Summer Heat While On The Road

We are truckin’ on through a hot summer and just like you would be prepared for harsh weather in the winter, it’s good to be prepared for the heat. Days out on the road can be long and hot during the summer. Check out these tips and tricks we’ve put together to help keep you and your rig cool.

  1. Stay Hydrated: Don’t leave the house without a bottle or case of water. Dehydration can be a serious issue for truckers. Whether you’re regional or OTR, you should always have a few bottles of water readily available. Dehydration can lead to feeling sluggish, exhausted and sometimes nauseous. You need to feel your best when out on the road and a bottle of water can make all the difference.
  2. Take Care of the Engine: You’re not the only one that needs to stay cool throughout the summer heat. A great way to protect your engine from the heat is to check the oil regularly. The oil keeps the engine cool and lubricates it to help the engine parts run smoothly. Check the oil by watching the gauge in your truck or check it manually. Your engine will also need a coolant. If you think your truck needs maintenance or an oil change, speak with the maintenance crew.
  3. Sunscreen: Take care of your skin on the road. No you are not laying out on the beach but those same U.V. rays are giving you a sunburn. “Trucker’s Arm,” is a real thing and is a funny tan line, but consistent sun exposure to the same spot can be dangerous. Stop by your local drug store to pick up some sunscreen. If you don’t like wearing sunscreen, you can get a sun sleeve that will protect your skin from the sun.
  4. Cool As Ice: Pro tip: put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and roll it in your bandana and tie around your neck. This will keep you nice and cool while you are on the road. Keep a cooler with ice packs and cubes in your cab, and when you feel yourself getting hot, drink some water and put an ice pack around your neck.
  5. Keep an Eye Out for Weather: Everyone prepares for snow and ice storms in the winter but the summer can also bring some bad weather, such as thunderstorms and heavy rains, that you will need to prepare for as well. Slick roads are dangerous. Make sure your breaks and tires are checked at the beginning of the season since the heat can erode or fade brakes quicker. Also check the weather radar before leaving for your trip so you have an idea of what to expect.
  6. Check Traffic Reports: Summer is a time for vacation and travel for many folks, which means more drivers and teen drivers on the road. Look out for them and be extra alert and cautious. Do your part in making the roadways a little safer.
  7. Take Breaks: It is okay to take a break every now and then. Give your body a change from being seated at the wheel for long periods of time. If you can, take some time to go inside a restaurant to eat. Something as simple as running inside at the fueling station to stretch your legs can help too. It is good to give yourself time to stretch and rejuvenate.
